Project Overview
Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network (DBCFSN), Keep Growing Detroit (KGD), Michigan Food and Farming Systems (MIFFS), Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems (CRFS), MSU Extension, and collaborated to deliver curriculum for Farm Business Management for the Global Majority. The online course trains new-to-early-stage Global Majority (BIPOC) producers in farm business management and improving Readiness for USDA programs. The 10-week curriculum included financial and human risks including strategic farm (urban and rural) management, record keeping and accounting basics, financial statements, business development and analysis, loan/lending preparation, using records for management decisions, marketing, addressing structural racism in lending/financing, and farm taxes. With a mixture of virtual learning spaces, in-person technical assistance and virtual open space communication and resource sharing, the course intends to increase accessibility and build equity with those who need it most. We are focused primarily on building a safe and culturally-grounded learning community among BIPOC producers and service providers (private industry, non-profit, government and university). We are currently evaluating the quality and impact of the course to inform enhancement of the curriculum and annual delivery, as a foundational approach to providing equitable resources to BIPOC producers.
