Project Overview
Education consisting of sequential
workshops, supplemented by homework assignments and individualized counseling,
was delivered in hybrid format (in-person and virtual) via a partnership of
subject matter experts and local educators in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and
Tennessee.
Two day-long (6 hours, 12 hours
total) workshops and ten virtual sessions (2 hours, 20 hours total) were
conducted, with the same producers attending all workshops. The first and last workshops were in-person.
Outcomes show 111 producers attended
at least one session, with 84 acquiring the risk management and market analysis
skills and understanding of their own operations to goals in five risk areas and
five marketing variables and delineate three implementation actions for each
goal. Participants were interviewed at project's end, reporting 47 farmers
completed all specified actions, and 37 completing only some actions.
The group completed 7,784 (average 92.6)
hours of homework and implemented 1,613 (average 19.2) specific actions;
evidence project objectives were met. Additional actions are expected to be
completed beyond the project’s time-frame.
This program with sequential
workshops, hands-on activities and individualized on-farm follow-up, ensured
accountability and helped participants succeed. Project results are consistent
with experience that behavior changes are more likely with sustained personal
support and accountability.
