This project helped Florida and South Carolina aquaculture producers (clams and oysters) identify production and legal liability (casualty) risks to their operations, prepare risk management plans, and take action to protect their operations from these and other risks.
Our first objective was to increase production risk management by increasing purchases of crop insurance (Micro Farm, Clam Dollar) and increasing participation in FSA disaster programs (NAP, ELAP), where crop insurance policies are not offered. To this end, we prepared a large amount of materials that were distributed in-person at meetings and are available online. Our second objective was to increase legal risk management by introducing producers to business structure, financial reporting, and casualty insurance policies available for business assets and employees.
We held three workshops in South Carolina and four workshops in Florida. We covered topics of best management practices, record keeping, production risk management, and legal risk management. These programs were moderately successful, although attendance was not as good as expected.
We should have a number or views for the online materials for you. However, hurricane Helene really disrupted the offices of UFL at Cedar Key (now listed as permanently closed). Please check back with us and we will provide that number.
