Project Overview
Napa has experienced unprecedented climate catastrophes in recent years: devastating wildfires, drought, and multiple atmospheric rivers, which have profoundly threatened the economic viability of winegrape producers. 2020 wildfire-related grapegrower losses exceeded $1 billion (Napa Valley Register); 2021/2022 statewide drought impacts on agriculture totaled $3.7 billion (CDFA); and in 2023, a Napa County emergency declaration estimated $8.5 million in flood damage. These climate risks underscore the urgent need for targeted education and training for Napa's agricultural community.
The Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG), representing a majority of Napa vineyards and leveraging years of experience leading impactful projects, executed this project to provide climate risk management education in English and Spanish to 710 winegrape producers. The project focused on educating producers about climate-smart agriculture, organic and regenerative farming practices, alternative fuels, and crop insurance strategies, aligning with FCIC top priorities.
Key objectives included hosting three educational events, producing 12 educational videos (six in English and six in Spanish), and launching an educational podcast on climate risk management topics.
Final Results:
- NVG surpassed engagement goals, reaching 34,309 individuals through in-person events, videos, and podcasts.
- In-Person Events: Three events (Grazing Field Day, Fire Resources Fair, and Cultivation Implements Field Day) were attended by 423 producers, with 86% of participants reporting increased confidence in sustainable practices and plans to implement new strategies.
- Climate Science Video Series: The 12 videos received 33,292 views, providing growers with actionable knowledge on climate-smart practices, mitigation strategies, and resilience-building.
- Podcast Series: Six episodes engaged 594 listeners, addressing critical topics such as weather challenges, harvest insights, and vineyard sustainability.
These outcomes reflect NVG's continued success in fostering climate resilience and sustainability among Napa's winegrape producers, ensuring the long-term viability of the region's viticulture.
